Dr Vas Novelli is an Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases who works in the infectious diseases department. He retired from the NHS in 2015, and he now exclusively sees private patients. His area of expertise includes tuberculosis/atypical mycobacterial, tropical diseases and viral infections.  


  • Tuberculosis/atypical mycobacterial infections 
  • Parasitic and tropical infections  
  • Infections in the immunocompromised host 
  • Varicella-Zoster virus infections: treatment and prevention 
  • Lyme disease 
  • Paediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections  
  • Fungal and viral infections in immunocompromised patients  
  • Tuberculosis   


  • Medical degree from University of Melbourne 
  • Trained in general paediatrics at the Nottingham Children’s Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney 
  • Obtained his paediatric infectious diseases training at GOSH, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and at the University of Texas Health Science Centre in San Antonio 


  • Previously was an Executive Member of the Children’s HIV Association of Great Britain and Ireland 
  • Past Member of the specialist Paediatric Panel and Infectious Diseases Panel 
  • Past Co-director of the GOSH HIV Family Clinic 
  • Past Member of the Steering Committee of the Collaborative HIV Paediatric Study Group of the UK  

Now retired from academic work, but had research interest previously in the following areas:   

  • Tuberculosis/atypical mycobacterial infections 
  • Infections in the immunocompromised host 
  • Varicella-Zoster virus infections: treatment and prevention 
  • Chronic viral hepatitis
