Great Ormond Street Hospital for children celebrates the hard work of their nursing staff this International Nurses Day

“Nursing is well and truly at the heart of children’s care at GOSH, and we are proud to recognise all the nurses that have helped to care for the children and families who have visited the hospital from across the world, past and present.” said Claudia Tomlin, Interim Head of Nursing for the International and Private Patient Division.

The nurses at GOSH are passionate about caring for all their international patients, always putting The Child First and Always. “I love working with our international patients: the real mix and diversity of patients and care is what makes working here so interesting.” says a Senior GOSH Nurse who cares for children from the GCC. “My proudest moment was when an Emeriti mother told me she would never forget me. It really meant a lot as I always try to do my best for the children and families around me.”

Nurses in the UK are highly trained, many holding more than one university degree in nursing, and continually train throughout their career to provide the best care for their patients. “Nursing is a heart-felt vocation, a highly skilled profession and advancing career. Nurses not only provide clinical care, but also vital emotional support to the children, families and staff around them.’ said Claudia Tomlin.

This year, with the theme as ‘Nurses as Heroes’, GOSH celebrates the international nature of their staff and the impact they have on the patients and families they treat. Families were encouraged to write and share messages for their heroes, which were shared.

The daylong event held in the hospital for all GOSH families and staff offered visitors information on the history of nursing at GOSH, raffles and quizzes with prizes to win and a map of the world, where staff shared where they were from, to highlight the inclusive and international nature of nursing at GOSH.
